In my studio I have many different newborn photography props that we can use. I love using props in my newborn sessions, they give you lots of variety in the photos and each props can be used in many ways! The different props available are buckets, bowls, crates, scales and beds, these all come in lots of different shapes and sizes.
My studio props
Whenever you are posing a newborn in a prop, safety must always come first. Not every baby can and will like doing every pose, so if you can see that the baby isn’t comfortable do not force it in any way. I have been professional trained at newborn workshops and have had many years experience!
Posing a newborn in a bucket
I have three different sizes of buckets and posing a newborn in a bucket is one of my favourite poses! You can pose the baby on their side, from above and from the front which is a very popular pose to do. here’s some of the poses you can accomplish when posing a baby in a bucket.
Posing a newborn in a bowl
A bowl is one of the first props I bought as its very versatile and often quite easy to pose a baby in a bowl as long as its big enough! I have two bowls, a large one which I love and it’s great for twins and then a smaller bowl which is more delicate. Bowls are mostly used for photography a baby from above and then you can do different angles from above. You can see some examples below.
Posing a newborn on scales
I bought some scales last year and I love them and would like to buy some more. You can only really get one photo with the scales which is straight on but its a great photos to have in your newborn gallery! You can purchase scales in all different colours and sizes, I bought some vintage scales off of eBay that work perfectly.
Posing a newborn in a bed or crib
Beds and cribs are really cute props you can pose newborns in. You can photographed them from above or the side, this way you can get a selection of angles. They come in lots of shapes and sizes as well but these are the ones I have below!
Posing a newborn on a bean bag
I guess you wouldn’t necessarily say a newborn posing bean bag is a prop but its essential for newborn photography. There are so many different poses you can do on a bean bag but this a whole new blog entirely. A posing bean bag is the first prop you should get and then I would say a bowl. Here are some newborn bean bag poses below.
