When looking for a newborn photographer there should be a few things you should look for. Every professional newborn photographer should be trained and have lots of experience so that they can handle your precious newborn safely. Newborn photography isn’t easy and not just anyone can do it. It takes a look of patience and skill and these are things you should look for when hiring a newborn photographer. The first question that everyone usually asks is… How much do you charge? While this is obviously important and most people have a budget they are trying to stick to you should try and remember to take after things into consideration as well.

10 important questions to ask your photographer

Have you been trained in safety during the newborn photoshoot?

Every newborn photographer should have gained some training, usually with other newborn photographers with more experience. This way they can learn on hand experience with posing the babies. I have been a professional newborn photographer in London for just over 5 years. Before venturing into newborn photography I mainly worked as a wedding and family photographer. When I first started out I attended many newborn photography workshops, without this experience I think it would have been hard to know how to develop this skill as much as I have. Not every baby will feel comfortable in every pose and you need to know how to pose newborns safely or know when a baby is uncomfortable and skip that pose altogether.

What is the Length of the newborn session?

My newborn sessions last about 3 hours, this is what I say when people enquire. You don’t want a newborn photographer rushing you through the session as this will not be a good experience and a rushed newborn session is not a good one. It always depends on the baby but I won’t end a session until we have got all of the photos, they can last about 4 hours if they include parent and sibling photos.

What age is best for my newborn to be photographed?

It’s best to have your newborn photographed when they are between 5-14 days old. At this age they will probably still be very sleepy and love being swaddled and warm. This allows for all those cute newborn poses you see!

How do I get my photos?

My photos are given to my clients on USB and some of my packages include printed photos. It’s best to back up your photos as digital photos can Deteriorate over time as well. I Keep my clients photos for up to 6 months to 1 year max but then I do have to delete photos as they take up so much space. So back up your photos and get them printed 🙂

Where are the photos taken, studio or your home?

Most of my newborn photography sessions take place in my studio, I offer home newborn session at an extra charge. In my studio I have all of my photography props to hand and perfect studio lighting. For home newborn sessions I mostly use natural light, so you would just need a nice space by a door or window.

Whats the pricing of their newborn photography?

My newborn photography packages start from £300 and all my prices can be found here. It’s a £95 deposit and then this is taken off from your chosen package. my pricing is very simple and there are no hidden costs. Always check with your newborn photographer the exact price you will be paying. You don’t want to miss anything and be upset as it’s more than you expected.

How long will it take for me to receive my newborn images?

Two weeks after your session you will some back to my studio to view your edited images. This is when you will chose the package you would like to purchase.

What happens if you can’t make it for the session, or if baby refuses to settle down for the photos?

This very very rarely happens and i have never actually had to reschedule a session. I have had newborn session that have taken a lot longer with a fussier baby but we just have to be patient. If for some reason your baby is just not happy that day we can discus you coming back another day.

Is the photographer insured?

Every professional newborn photographer should be insured, I have professional indemnity and liability insurance. This covers me to photograph in clients house and my studio from accidents that could happen. This also covers me if something should happen to any of my images/harddrives.

Do you use my images on your website or social media?

Whenever a client books in they will fill out a booking form. Here I will ask you for your permission for client release and if you are ok be me using your images for advertising/on my website. You can tick yes or no so I will never use your images without your permission.
