There are a lot of newborn photographers out there and it can get quite hard to know what you are looking for when you are doing your research! Hopefully this blog will be really helpful and provide you with answers to questions you may have about preparing for a newborn session.
How do I book a newborn session?
It’s best to book in your newborn session while you are pregnant or as soon as possible to guarantee to get a space. I would book in your session about 7-14 days after your due date and then if you are early or late we will reschedule. I only book a certain amount of newborns a month to allow space for rescheduling. You would then fill out my booking form and pay the session fee and you will also receive my client prep guide, this will help you with what to expect from a newborn session.
When and where do my Newborn sessions take place and how long do they last?
My Newborn sessions take place at my Studio in Hackney Wick, Monday-Fridays at 10.30am. i find this is the best time to photograph your baby as they tend to be more sleepy. My studio is all set-up for your session where I have lots of various props to create a variety of beautiful images for you. The sessions generally last about 3 hours but this can vary from baby to baby. Every baby is different and my sessions are baby led so we have to go with the flow with what your baby needs!
What do I need to bring with me to the session?
When preparing to come to your newborn session make sure you bring extra nappies (although I always have spare too!) and extra milk if you are not breast feeding. Its best to also have your baby in a loose baby grow that is easy to take off when you get here. Other than that you shouldn’t need to bring much but if you have any keepsakes that you would like in the photos be sure to bring them along too!
Can we include sibling and parent photos?
Yes I love including sibling and parent photos in my newborn sessions. Not all parents want to or feel up to it but these first weeks do fly by so fast. It’s better to have taken the photos and you not like them as you don’t have to include pick these for your final selection than regret not taking them.
Should I feed my baby before coming?
It’s always to feed your baby right before the session. Depending on how far away you live you can feed them just before you leave or when you get to my studio. We love a milk drunk baby 🙂
Can i pick the colours and props for the sessions?
Yes! I always ask you for your preferred colours and props for photographing your baby. I will ask you to email at least 3 of your favourite photos. This will give me an idea of the style you prefer before your session.
What happens if my baby doesn’t sleep?
As we know babies don’t always do what we would like them to do! not every baby will sleep most of the session and some may need to be fed almost every 15 minutes! I have photographed babies who are very sleepy and then others who are just fighting it the whole session. Under the circumstances when your baby won’t sleep we can still get lots of cute awake photos and include parents ones too! If your baby is unwell or crying the whole session we can reschedule but this has only ever happened to me once with having to reschedule a session.
I hope this has helped you with what to expect for a newborn session!
